OCR: ROBOTS IN FILM THE LAWS OF ROBOTICS INTERPLANETARY SPACECRAFT In the early 80s, Europeans began to show interest in "solar wind" power. The Union for the Promotion of Phototonic Propulsion was formed to bring together engineers from the French National Space Research Center and the ONERA. The Union's goal is the same as that of the World Space Foundation: to launch an amateur race of solar sail craft to the moon, like the one described in Clarke's story. Unfortunately the World Space Foundation faces increasing problems. The Foundation is attracting few new members and funds are sorely lacking. According to certain estimates, it would take a budget of $9 million to continue private solar sail research. But things could change, because NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab is again working on the possible use of solar sails ... to study the sun, in fact. The JPL states that solar sails are being seriously considered for use on future exploratory spacecraft. MARS BETAT
